On November 25, the UN marked the International Day for the Eliminiation of Violence against Women, and the General Assembly invited organizations and NGOs to organize different activities in order to raise public awareness of the problem.

One in three women suffer from abuse or violence in her lifetime, and  the problem exists in many different forms in all societies. It is not only a human rights violation, but also affects women’s and girls’ rights to security, health, food, and education, which means that many women are locked in a vicious cycle of poverty and violence. Since theproblems violence and poverty perpetuate each other, the connections between violence against women and poverty are very clear. Around 70% of the world’s poor are, in fact, women.

In 2004, Amnesty launched the global campaign Stop Violence against Women, which has already contributed to a number of successes that have brought different legislative and policy changes at natonal levels, as well as supported effors for the adpotion of Resolution 1325 and 1820 by the UN Secrity Council. Those resolutions on Women’s Peace and Security ensure women’s participation in conflict prevention and resolution, post-conflict peacebuilding och also aim to protect and increase the human rights of women and girls in conflict situations.
