Refugee camp gone “green”

A refugee camp is perhaps not the first place where you would imagine a conservation project. But in the western highlands of Ethiopia, this has become reality.
Refugees in camps are often associated with environmental destruction and UNHCR, realizing that this perception needed to change, initiated the conservation project in the camp of Sherkole, Ethiopia. A main focus is wood conservation, mainly because the fact that when a refugee camp is set up, the surrounding area can sometimes easily become deforested as people need wood to build their homes and for fuel. With the participation of the people in the camp, the results have been surprisingly successful.
