Child labour a barrier to education

Posted on | August 12, 2008 | No Comments

According to UNICEF, around 158 million children under the age of 15 are caught in child labour. Not only do these children often have to work long hours with physically exhaustive work, but they also have little hope of going to school, learning how to read and write and thus create a brighter future for themselves.

Since education is a basic right of all children, it is especially important to eliminate the incentives for children to work. You can read more about what UNICEF is doing here. Human Rights Watch also has extensive information.

12 June has been designated the World Day against Child Labour by the UN International Labour Organization, and is observed annually in order to raise awareness about the cycles of poverty involved in child labour. Find more information here.
