In Pakistan there is a still growing interest in e-learning. MKFC Stockholm College is since a couple of years involved in grassroot education as part of a government supported Health and Vaccination program in rural areas. The national ambition is to build an e-learning structure for both university and high school

Alamdar Khan, Master of Economics and e-Commerce in Pakistan, has worked in the Planning Commission of Pakistan, National Bank of Pakistan with diverse experience of monitoring and evaluation of mega projects of Pakistan and system administration of the bank’s online system then arrived for further studies in Sweden and is now also a MKFC cooperator.

– I came in touch with MKFC for a case study as part of my studies in Sweden. I learned about the MKFC work going on in Pakistan, and I did like the organization because of the friendly environment, horizontal structure of organization and their participatory decision making approach.

– I now work with a report on the education system and prospects for e-learning, as a brief introduction to Pakistan.

– We have a lot of educational problems and the illiteracy is high, literacy rate is about 54%. In the remote areas there are not many schools, and some children don’t attend schools due to social, cultural or economic reasons. Many parents feel insecure when sending away their child to another city, and others cannot afford it because of school charges.

– My personal interests have a long history, and actually I have opened a school which belongs to a well established chain of schools. I got the inspiration because as a child I was sent to a good school in the city far away from my family. Now, thanks to my school, there is a good option in my area, so the children living there can stay at home.

-When this school works with profit I intend to offer scholarships for poor children making further education possible.

-My dream is to promote education at a grassroot level, and I like the MKFC aim to provide education to people with limited access to schools.

– The government is very interested in developing e-learning, and already there is a university offering e-learning courses: the Virtual University of Pakistan, delivers many courses both on Master and Graduation levels.

– The creation of the National ICT Research and Development Fund is another important step forward. Its obligation is to promote e-learning and ICT on national level. The interest is focused on Chemistry, Physics, Biology and Mathematics at High School level.

– I am an optimist and very confident about the success of e-learning in Pakistan. If the government initiates courses a at high school level I think, considering the skilled human resource shortfall, social, cultural and economic problems, that it will really work.
