UNESCO Forum focusing on women and climate change

Climate change affects us all, but in many ways women are the most exposed to its often dramatic consequences. In many traditional societies, they are generally less well-informed than men, and they are often the most important actor when it comes to feeding their families.

Thus, if climate change leads to a crisis in food security, storms or droughts, then the pressure on women will increase, and girls are less likely to be sent to school. Women are also key actors when it comes to handling water and fuel resources.

But women are not only victims when it comes to the effects of climate change – they also have an important key role to play. Because they have such vital responsibilities in many societies, they are in a great position to influence behaviour changes that can have a major effect in the long run. And because women are the ones that usually manage water and fuel, an increase in knowledge and a change in behaviour for women can change the world.

For these reasons, the 4th UNESCO Forum on Gender Equality, taking place 19 June, will focus on “Gendered dimensions on climate change”. Read more here.
